Donny Schmit
Nel 1991, ha vinto tre GP e sembrava sulla buona strada per difendere il suo titolo. Ma un infortunio subito al GP di Ungheria lo ha costretto a perdere una buona parte della stagione e gli impedì di ripetere il successo di campione del mondo.
Nel 1992, Schmit ha cercato nuove sfide nel 250cc Motocross World Championship, ed è stato lì che ha colpito l’oro nuovamente. Quella stagione, in sella a Yamaha Chesterfield, Schmit ha vinto il suo secondo titolo mondiale, contando cinque 250 GP vittorie lungo la strada. Rimase con Chesterfield Yamaha per le successive due stagioni e anche se ha vinto altre tre gare della 250cc Grand Prix, non ha mai riacquistato il titolo mondiale.
A Donny fu diagnosticata la leucemia. Morì il 19 gennaio 1996, all’età di 29. America ha perso uno dei suoi più belli eroi motocross.
Schmit shocked the world, and perhaps even himself, with his immediate success on the world circuit. He won four Grands Prix en route to earning the 1990 125cc World Motocross Championship. The dashing blond American quickly became a favorite rider among the European fans.
In 1991, he won three GPs and looked well on his way to defending his title. But an injury suffered at the Hungary GP forced him to miss a good portion of the season and kept him from repeating as world champ.
In 1992, Schmit looked for new challenges in the 250cc Motocross World Championship, and it was there that he struck gold again. That season, riding for Chesterfield Yamaha, Schmit won his second world title, tallying five 250 GP wins along the way. He stayed with Chesterfield Yamaha for the next two seasons and even though he won three more 250cc Grand Prix races, he never regained the world title.
Donny was diagnosed with leukemia. He died on January 19, 1996, at the age of 29. America lost one of its nicest motocross heroes.
