LETTERA APERTA PAOLO MARTIN

.
Salve Sig. Martin,
.
In Russia qualificato e ritirato.
.
Distinti saluti.
.
Antonio Cairoli

For the attention of Mr Martin,
.
Last week, on christmas eve, I found myself having to read your long ‘Open’ letter twice and I found many things that were surprising… so much so that I think that you didn’t even watch the movie that seems to be a source of your complaint.
.
First of all I want to make clear that I’ve never asked you to make an interview for the film and that I never decided to cut your or anybody else’s words. The movie is about ‘Antonio Cairoli’ but was not conceived, made, directed or produced by me. The producers are two Dutch guys that have collected images and interviews and then created the movie. So I’m curious to know what you mean by:  ‘what might have led you to make these statements’?
.
In the movie I do not express any judgment against you or your team and there are no statements from me personally about the professionalism of your team or the competitiveness of the bikes. I just aired my opinion about the two years, in which we won a national title, but we achieved much less than what we wanted and after the second season I felt isolated and without any confidence in the team. Especially concerning plans for the future that were to ride the regional (Triveneto) championship. I think I have the right to express an opinion about a period of my life.
.
Should I hide the fact that I suffered by staying away from home? That I was sad and wanted to return to Sicily? I think it’s something that I’m allowed to say and I have every right to. And I never gave any specific reasons when you know that I could have also reported some…but I have no grudge or bad blood against you and will never do so for what happened in the past. I have no problems acknowledging the fact that you helped me and invited me into your home.
.
Maybe the moviemakers have highlighted the difficult or dramatic moments of my life and career (it’s a movie!), but my memory of those two years is not wholly negative. The summary of what I think of that experience has been in existence for a long time and is even written on the page ‘About Me’ on my website (tonycairoli.com): ‘I arrived in 2002 at the motocross world championship (125cc): three races. For me it was a dream come true, I almost could not believe to be in the middle of those champions that I followed since I was a child. In Genk, the first race, I did not qualify; my debut race was Loket, Czech Republic. The result was: twenty-first and I didn’t get any points! In Russia I qualified but I DNF. It was anyway a good experience, that helped me to understand the difficulties and the level of the world championship. In 2003 I participated in three races (Italy, Belgium and Germany) with Honda Tiscali but I never qualified.’
.
‘…It was anyway a good experience…’ – I believe this is what you will find is written and this what I think, even now.
.
When you say: ‘Do you really imagine you became an accomplished rider in just a few months’… I cannot help but believe when a rider after two seasons and zero points in the world championship standings (and facing the prospect of riding a regional championship) changes team and in other two seasons scores a total of 1014 Grand Prix points that maybe it shows that something with the first team did not work?
.
Finally I cannot hide my distaste with your choice to write an open letter on things that we could have discussed between us. In the end I have to reject firmly your phrase: ‘I should like to see some respect for the worth of our efforts, and for the commitment and experience placed at the disposal of everyone, yourself included.’ I consider it offensive because I am the first person to pay respect to everybody and make my best effort not to disrespect anybody!
.
In the end I’m sorry to see and read about your reaction to the movie but I can confirm that I have nothing against you personally…and I believe I underlined this with my comments on film.
.
I think this discussion can be considered as closed. I have to think about 2015 and for sure the same applies for you.
.
With best regards
.
Antonio Cairoli
