MATTERLEY BASIN (Inghilterra), 15 Giugno 2016 

Dopo un weekend di pausa, la MXGP approda all’undicesimo round del Campionato del Mondo FIM Motocross in una delle piste più famose del mondo, a Matterley Basin, Winchester in Inghilterra.

Ma perché è così rinomata? Perché piace soprattutto ai piloti grazie al suo bel terreno “gripposo”..  perché è bella larga e con un sacco di traiettorie e punti dove superare.. perché si formano canali da sogno in cui poter piegare forte fino a grattare il manubrio per terra.. perché è super scorrevole, perché i salti sono perfetti, perché le waves sono “cazzute”..  perché ci sono curve in appoggio e curve in contropendenza, e curvoni veloci, salti classici a “tabletop”, enormi salti doppi e tripli, ed anche un quadruplo per chi ha le “palle”… si, a Metterley Basin c’è tutto!

E i fans la amano perché è ricavata all’interno di un bacino naturale tra le dolci colline del Winchester, il che significa che offre un’eccezionale visuale dell’intero circuito.

Matterley Basin ha ospitato il primo GP del Mondiale FMI nel 2006, ed anche il più atteso evento di quell’anno, il Motocross delle Nazioni 2006. Negli anni successivi è stata sospesa per poi tornare in calendario nel 2011. Quest’anno questa fantastica pista ospiterà il GP d’Inghilterra per la sesta volta consecutiva, come anche il settimo round del Campionato Europeo EMX250, e il quarto e quinto round della EMX300 e della EMX125, presentate dalla FMF Racing. Inoltre si terrà anche il secondo round del Campionato Europeo Honda EMX150.

Già dal primo round Tim Gajser , del Team Honda Gariboldi, ha infiammato il campionato con la sua incredibile doppia vittoria di manche e con la vittoria generale in Qatar, andando subito in testa alla classifica. E anche se al secondo GP  gli ha subito soffiato la tabella rossa, Tim ha continuato ad andare forte e se l’ha riconquistata al settimo GP in Germania. E da allora sta facendo a pezzi i suoi avversari.. infatti TG243 è l’unico pilota della classe regina ad essere andato a podio ad ogni GP: ha conquistato 5 pole positions, è stato in testa per 157 giri, e ha vinto 9 gare e 5 GP.

Ma Romain Febvre non ha mai paura, soprattutto quando si tratta di curvare forte nei canali profondi, e siamo certi che nelle curve di Matterley Basin farà strisciare per terra il manubrio della sua Yamaha YZF450RM numero 461! Il campione in carica adesso è sotto di soli 24 punti dal “debuttante” Tim Gajser, il che vuol dire che Tim non può permettersi di perdere neanche una manche, soprattutto se Romain dovesse vincere. In quel caso la tabella rossa tornerebbe nelle mani del campione francese, e questo ci da anche una chiara idea di quanto sia serrata la lotta al vertice in questo momento!

Nonostante il nostro Antonio Cairoli, del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, non sia più quel giovane arrembante degli anni passati, è comunque spesso l’uomo da battere.. e qui a Matterley Basin TC222 ha vinto 4 GP, molti di più di chiunque altro. Anche Jeffrey Herlings, il suo compagno in casa KTM, qui ha vinto solo una volta. Tony è anche secondo nella classifica dei giri al comando nel 2016 con 100 giri, e TG243 guida questa classifica con 157. Il fatto che Tony sia ancora secondo in questa classifica è un buon segno e vuol dire che ha ancora quello che serve per vincere e considerando che ha impiegato molto tempo a guarire dall’infortunio dell’anno scorso, potrebbe essere stata solo la mancanza di forma fisica ad avergli impedito di fare dei buoni risultati.

Dopo un inizio di stagione complicato e deprimente per Clement Desalle, che si è rotto il braccio due settimane prima della prima gara in Qatar, il pilota del team Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing ha faticato molto per rimettersi in forma. Ma ad ogni gara che passa sembra che Clement stia tornando ad essere sempre più forte, e non dovremo sorprenderci se lo rivedremo presto sul podio.. e potrebbe succedere proprio questo weekend dato che Clement ha già vinto qui un MXGP d’Inghilterra nel 2013.

Evgeny Bobryshev del Team HRC è un altro da tenere d’occhio. L’anno scorso il pilota russo ha chiuso il campionato in terza posizione, e quest’anno è stato molto costante ed è salito sul podio tre volte. “Non so come fanno Tim e Romain ad andare così forte e devo capire perché non riuscivo prenderli..”, ha detto Bobry dopo la premiazione al MXGP di Francia, e sarà interessante vedere se ha scoperto come fare dopo essersi riguardato tutte le repliche delle gare!

Ma quest’anno a Matterley c’è anche un sacco di attesa per la straordinaria partecipazione di uno dei piloti più famosi e di successo del mondo, Chad Reed, che prenderà parte alla gara come Wild Card con il Team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory. Reedy, come viene soprannominato, è un pilota con uno stile di guida fantastico e sarà bellissimo vederlo in pista a giocarsela con i migliori al mondo. Inoltre Chad sarà in diretta al “LIVE Studio Show” con le leggende Paul Malin e Jeff Emig dove risponderà alle domande che i tifosi potranno fare sui Social, Facebook, Twitter e Instagram!

L’atmosfera nel paddock sarà tutta a favore dei due piloti Inglesi, Shaun Simpson del team Wilvo Virus Performance KTM e Tommy Searle del Team Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki, che quest’anno non sono ancora riusciti a salire sul podio nonostante abbiano entrambi le capacità per farcela. E i tifosi Inglesi sono famosi per essere molto “rumorosi” e sarà bello vederli incitare i loro piloti, compreso Jake Nicholls  del Team Hitachi Revo Husqvarna.

L’anno scorso il GP a Matterly Basin è stato “diverso” per Jeffrey Herlings del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, perché stranamente non riuscì a vincere.. infatti era stato battuto alla grande da Valentin Guillod, dopo una gara memorabile in cui hanno lottato con le unghie e con i denti dall’inizio alla fine. Quest’anno Herlings “The Bullet” (“il Proiettile”)sembra essere un pilota più maturo, ed è anche diventato incredibilmente astuto.. non fa più le cose di fretta, ha imparato ad aspettare ed a lasciare che i risultati arrivino da soli… e dato che è un talento naturale gli sta riuscendo molto bene! E quindi, come sempre, è dura pensare che non riuscirà a vincere..!

E per quanto riguarda la lotta per la seconda posizione, o la prima degli umani… è impossibile fare pronostici..  e ora c’è anche Benoit Paturel , del team Kemea Yamaha Official , che si è “intromesso” nella lotta e dopo i suoi due secondi posti consecutivi cercherà di fare ancora meglio, o almeno di risalire sul podio per la terza volta. E nel frattempo il suo connazionale Dylan Ferrandis, del team Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing, cercherà di riscattarsi dopo aver fatto un po’ i “capricci” durante il suo deludente GP di casa due settimane fa in Francia.

E poi ci sono gli altri piloti in grado di giocarsela… come Jeremy Seewer del Team Suzuki World MX2 che è in seconda posizione in campionato con 31 punti di vantaggio su Pauls Jonass, il campione in carica del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. E la cosa bella di questi ragazzi è che, anche se sanno bene che Jeffrey è superiore, sono sempre agguerriti e spingono al massimo per cercare di prenderlo!

Ma l’adrenalina del pubblico verrà alimentata soprattutto dai due piloti di casa, Max Anstie del TeamRockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing, e Adam Sterry del Team Wilvo Virus Performance KTM. Quando Anstie è “in giornata” ha le capacità per salire sul podio ma non gli riesce molto spesso.. mentre il giovane Inglese Mewse, che ha cominciato l’anno dominando il Campionato Europeo EMX250, è stato poi catapultato in MX2 per sostituire il suo compagno di squadra Thomas Covington. Anche se è stato un “grosso salto” per lui sembra che si stia adattando abbastanza bene, visto che ha già finito una gara nei primi dieci ed è riuscito ad arrivare ottavo nella prima manche del GP di Francia.

Sterry invece, che si era rotto il braccio alla gara di apertura in Qatar, sta tornando in forma e da quando è tornato a correre, al settimo round in Germania, è già riuscito a finire nei primi dieci in Spagna e in Italia.

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain), 15 June 2016 – After a weekend off, MXGP returns to action with the eleventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship taking place this weekend at one of the most popular venues in the world, Matterley Basin, Winchester, England.

Why is it one of the most popular venues in the world? The riders like it because the soil is nice and tacky, it’s wide, it has loads of lines and places to pass, the ruts are a bar-draggers dream, the flow is wicked, the jumps are mint, the waves are gnarly, there are on-cambered corners, off cambered corners, sweepers, classic tabletops, massive doubles, triples and even a quad for those with big knackers, you name it… Matterley Basin has it.

The fans love it because it’s built inside what is best described as a basin, in other words its built in between the rolling hills of Winchester, which means the views of the entire circuit are second to none.

Matterley Basin hosted its first round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in 2006, in that same year it also hosted the most raved over event of the year, the Motocross of Nations. It then laid low for a few years before returning in 2011. This year’s FULLBACK MXGP of Great Britain will be the sixth time in succession that the British GP will take place at this awesome venue where we will be also hosting the seventh round of the European Championship EMX250, as well as the fourth and fifth rounds of the EMX300 presented by FMF Racing & EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. It will also host the second round of the Honda European Championship EMX150.

 

Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser set the championship on fire during his MXGP class debut at round one in Qatar with his mind blowing double moto victory for the overall and the early championship lead. He did lose the red plate at round two, to Romain Febvre, but kept on charging and reclaimed it at round seven in Germany. Since then, he has been piece by piece dismantling the competition.

TG243 is the only rider in the premier class to have finished on the podium at every single round. He has gone pole 5 times, led 157 laps, won 9 races and 5 grand prix’.

There’s nothing like a bar drag! Which will probably work in favor of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre this weekend with the 461 completely unafraid of laying his Yamaha YZF450RM into corners at speed. The defending champ is currently 24 points down on the rookie, Tim Gajser, which means Tim still can’t afford to lose a moto, especially if Romain was to win. That would instantly put the red plate back in the hands of the champ, and that also indicates how tight it is at the top at the moment.

Despite not being a hard charging youngster anymore, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoliis more often than not, the man to beat. TC222 has won four grand prix’ at Matterley Basin, which is a lot more than anyone else. Even fellow KTM star Jeffrey Herlings has only won here once. He also sits in second place on the ‘laps led’ in 2016 chart, with 100 laps led. TG243 leads the ‘laps led’ with 157. The fact Tony is still second is a good sign he’s still got the goods and since he has been recovering from last year’s injury, it could be just lack of race fitness that has impeded his results.

After a heart-breaking start to the year where he snapped his arm two weeks before the season opener in Qatar, Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle has been struggling on the rocky road to recovery. He seems to be getting stronger with every race which means it should come as no real shock to see him on the podium sooner rather than later, and could possibly happen this weekend especially since he has already won the MXGP of Great Britain at this venue back in 2013.

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev is another one to keep an eye on. The Russian, who finished third in the championship last year, has been on the box three times this season and is all about consistency. “I don’t know how Tim and Romain are riding so fast, I have to check, because I couldn’t catch them,” he said following the podium ceremony at the MXGP of France. It will be interesting to see if he learned anything new from the MXGP replay.

As one of the most popular and successful riders in the world, there is a lot of hype surrounding Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s wild card entry Chad Reed. Reedy has an awesome style on the bike and it’ll be awesome to see him out there mixing it up with the best in the world. Wilvo Virus Performance KTM’s Shaun Simpson and Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle will be responsible for the atmosphere in the paddock. Both riders have the ability to stand of the box, yet neither of them has managed to do so this year.

British fans have a wild reputation and it’s always cool to see the crowd getting involved by making some noise for their favorite riders. So if you’re a fan, bring your air horn and make some noise for the locals! That includes Hitachi Revo Husqvarna’s Jake Nicholls as well.

Last year, Matterley Basin was incredibly interesting for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who didn’t win the MX2 grand prix of Great Britain. Instead he was beat fair and square by Valentin Guillod after a memorable race where the duo fought tooth and nail from start to finish. The Bullet seems to have matured as a rider this year, and in he has also become incredibly crafty. He doesn’t rush things any more, he just bides his time and lets the results come, and since he is so naturally gifted, it almost always works in his favor. As always, it’s hard not to bet against him for the win.

As for the battle for second place… your guess is as good as ours. Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team ’s Benoit Paturel is on the cable at the moment and has barged his way into the conversation. Paturel has landed on the second step of the podium two times in a row now and will be looking to better that, or make it three this weekend. Meanwhile, fellow Frenchman Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis will be out for redemption after a wayward home grand prix two weeks ago.

And then there are the other guys capable of footing it. Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer is running second in the championship with a 31-point advantage over the current vice world champion Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass. What is cool about these guys is, although they know Jeffrey is a cut above, they are eager as heck to catch him.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s duo of Max Anstie and Conrad Mewse and Wilvo Virus Performance KTM’s Adam Sterry will be the crowd’s adrenalin shot. When all his stars are in line Anstie has the skills to top the box, it’s just lining up those stars that is the hard part. As for Mewse, after starting the year with a dominating performance in the European Championship EMX250 where he went 1 – 1 for the win, the young Brit was bumped up to MX2 to fill in for his teammate Thomas Covington. Although it is a big leap, he seems to be adapting ok since he’s already posted a top ten result with his eighth place in the opening moto at the MXGP of France.

Sterry broke his arm at the season opener in Qatar and has since been on a come back. Since his return to the championship, at round seven in Germany, he has already nailed finished inside the top ten at races in Spain and Italy.
